Things to think about when packing for storage
A self storage unit is an ideal facility to keep seasonal gear that you don't want in your house all year round, or to keep your things while you're moving to a different location and can't fit all of your things in the new house. In order to fit all the things in the storage unit, and to make sure that they are being kept in the best possible condition, there are a lot of things you need to think about. To achieve this, there are some things you can consider when it comes to how you're packing your items.
Packing boxes
Boxes are essential when it comes to storing things in a self storage unit. They are sturdy enough for the items being stored not to be crushed, they let air circulate inside them so that mould is avoided, and they can also be stacked on top of each other to make the most out of the space available. As you're packing your things in boxes, make sure you don't pack more than you can carry in each individual box. You might have a helping hand with you as you're storing the stuff, but not when you're emptying it later. You should also remember to never overfill a box. Its sides should not bulge out, as this makes it much more difficult to stack them properly later.
Specialised boxes
All boxes don't have to be filled to the brim, especially if they contain items that are better off being given some space. If you have suits that you want to store, for example, you should buy boxes that are tall enough for you to hang the clothing in instead of folding it. A lot of box sales online also have boxes especially made for storing clothes this way. If you have a lot of smaller items, such as jewellery or cutlery, which you wish to store, you should get small boxes with compartments inside to prevent necklaces from tangling and cutlery from getting mixed up.
Vacuum bags
You should avoid using plastic bags for most of your items, but if you have bed linen or other large objects made out of fabric that you wish to store, you could use a vacuum bag. These types of bags allow you to suck all the air out of them using a vacuum cleaner. This prevents mould and mildew from forming as there is no air it can use to grow. It also saves you a lot of space, reducing the volume of these items by vacuuming them.
