A locksmith is probably the first person you think of when you're locked out of your home or have lost your keys, and certainly getting people back into their houses and changing locks are probably some of the most common tasks they perform. However, a locksmith can also be considered as something of a home security expert and can help improve the overall security of your home in a variety of ways, some of which might surprise you. Note a few of those here.

1. Adding locks to outbuildings and entryways

Don't assume a locksmith only changes locks when you've lost a key; they can actually add locks to your home's entryways, including glass door walls and even windows. This can include locks that you need a key to open from the inside, as this prevents someone from breaking a window or screen and reaching in to unlock the door. Thick deadbolts can also be installed by a locksmith. They may also install thicker, heavy-duty locks on outbuildings including sheds and garages, and also note vulnerable points in your home that may need heavier locks or additional locks.

2. Changing locks

Don't assume that a lockout is the only time you should have the locks changed in your home. Over the years, your keys could have been loaned out to neighbors or your kids may have taken them to someone else's home, and they may have been easily duplicated. Having a locksmith change your locks every few years can keep your home safe. This can also allow them the chance to upgrade the locks to something thicker, more durable, less likely to be kicked in, and better for your home's overall safety and security.

3. Installing security screens

A locksmith may be able to install security screens to your home; these are screens outside the windows that lock in place and which provide added security against break-ins. Since they involve an actual lock and aren't just slid into place, a locksmith can be the right choice for their installation. They can not only install the screens and ensure the locks are working properly but also install alarms around the screens in case they are forced open. Many locksmiths also install burglar bars outside windows, or can upgrade your home's sliding glass door walls by adding security film to the window to make it less penetrable and tougher to break. Don't assume locks are the only security feature that a locksmith might install, but consider that they often offer these additional products and services as well.
